Plus One Flyers Safety Record Nets 46% Insurance Reduction

A whopping 38% reduction in aircraft insurance premiums paid by the club relative to 2006 rates highlights the success of the club's Safety Program and the collective excellent flying judgment, skills and habits of club members, and helps offset rising fuel costs! THE PLUS ONE FLYERS SAFETY PROGRAM

Personal flight is a privilege and uniquely American legacy we take seriously and endeavor to protect and promote. The club's Safety Program was created to specifically and proactively manage our club member pilot flying risks. While no panacea, the program has produced undeniably tangible results for many years, including year after year accident avoidance.

There are two cornerstones of the Safety Program, the first of which is the club's member CFIs, who through the club's semi-monthly CFI Safety Meetings, conducted by the club's Safety Officer, are continually updated and inculcated with safety-oriented decision-making training techniques, post-incident or post-accident analyses, and open and professional discussion and Q&A of new FAA requirements and club policies. The meetings are mandatory at least once every six months for a CFI to retain authorization to give flight instruction in club airplanes.

The second cornerstone of the Safety Program is the club-mandated ANNUAL flight review for every member not already in an active training syllabus, twice as often as the FAA requires. Not only does this immediately encourage higher flight proficiency, it provides twice the opportunity for our member CFIs to evaluate, train and coach our club members to a higher standard of club pilot expectations, and review and reinforce the club's Bylaws, Operational Rules and Code of Conduct, which are reasonable, sensible and easy to follow.

Safety Program Updates

SAFETY REMINDERS HOTLIST

  • Slow Taxi Speeds on the Ramp - Keep taxi speeds on the parking ramps slow with engine at or below 1000 RPM, especially in proximity of other aircraft.
  • Watch wing and tail clearance - During aircraft taxiing and pushback watch wing and tail clearances carefully. During pushback put your passenger or CFI to work as a "wing-walker" to watch wing and tail clearances for you.
  • Don't blow debris into auto parking lots - Pull your aircraft forward and away from parking areas before you start the engine to avoid blowing debris onto your fellow members' parked cars.
  • No open-toe shoes or sandals may be worn by the pilot in command or student pilots.
  • Storage of Loose Items and Tow Bar - Keep loose items and the aircraft tow bar secured. Always place the tow bar in the lower baggage compartment or into its snap-holder instead of the upper shelf, where it might fall into the empennage control cables.
  • Park Props in HORIZONTAL POSITION after parking airplane with magnetos OFF to reduce the risk of catching the surface of other taxiing aircraft.
  • Push-back parking of aircraft - When returning to the ramp in rows of parked aircraft please do not power your airplane into its parking place, but rather taxi straight ahead past your parking space, and after shutdown use the tow bar to back the airplane into its space. During pushback put your passenger or CFI to work as a "wing-walker" to watch wing and tail clearances for you. Make sure the magnetos are OFF and key is removed prior to attaching the tow bar.
  • Write and Call-In Squawks - When returning from a flight, clearly and concisely write up your squawks on the squawk sheet pad -- including your name -- then call in to the owner/maintenance as indicated by the club operations log binder in the cockpit. Finally, put the squawk sheet(s) into the airplane's folder in the club's local office. Make a courtesy call to the member who is scheduled next for the airplane to inform them of the status.
  • Check ADs and Inspection Compliance DURING PREFLIGHT - Review the aircraft status on your printed Schedule Master pre-flight check-out page to determine that all inspections are current, especially Airworthiness Directives (ADs). If out of compliance, first call the owner/maintenance as indicated by the club operations log binder in the cockpit, to determine if the inspection has been completed. Keep in mind that the 50 hour and 100 hour inspections are not mandated and can be expired. The airplane's maintenance manuals are always available with sufficient advance planning from the maintenance shop or owner.
  • Note: As part of the airplane preflight make sure all inspections and Airworthiness Directives (AD) are in compliance and not out of date. Especially check all AD notes and if they have a tach time associated with them then compare that time shown on the status sheet information with the actual tach time in the plane. Do not fly that plane with overdue inspections or overdue AD notes, this would then be not be an airworthy airplane.

MANDATORY CFI SAFETY MEETINGS

All Plus One Flyers FAA-Certified Flight Instructor members giving instruction, flight reviews or checkouts in club airplanes are required to attend at least one safety meeting within the previous six months. All club members are also invited to attend CFI safety meetings, which are held at the Montgomery Terminal building first floor conference room (under Casa Machado restaurant) unless otherwise specified.
